Just what makes news so sexy?
(extracted from Asian Channels, August ’07 issue)
“You need it everyday, go back to it all the time and content brings you back,” quipped Alan Seiffert, Senior Vice president, Business Development & partnership, CNBC Asia Pacific at the third installment of the MoCo Party held on August 7th at the swanky Caza Z. In short, strong content is key to ensuring user satisfaction and loyalty. This, he stressed, is what makes CNBC’s content sexy. From CNBC’s experience, key drivers of mobile news are headline news and videos –“It’s not just the news but the visuals which attract our subscribers. In addition, how we deliver it, and the flexibility to address users in the diverse markets of Asia has also contributed to our success in this space,” Seiffert said.
User generated content can be huge if managed well, but data charges and the whole value chain are also big issues which need to be addressed to ensure the impact of news content on mobiles. Of course, the price issue of data charges was brought up, but Seiffert pointed out that those who want timely news are willing to pay for it. He also noted that mobile operators such as M1 who already offer cap plans will help spur this industry to greater heights, so he has no doubts that news on the mobile will not lose its sexiness.

Now it can be told – last Wednesday’s MoCo Party at the chic Attica club in Singapore’s Clarke Quay was a smash hit, with over 200 people from regional operators, regional media (including yours truly, CHARGED) and all the movers and shakers in the mobile content arena, including Sony BMG, MTV, ESPN, AXN/Animax and more. Sponsored by Yahoo! and initiated by industry professionals who are passionately evangelizing mobile technology and content development, MoCo Party’s mission is to bridge the mobile/content gap with an informal community for mobile and media professionals looking to exchange ideas on new media strategies. On that criteria alone, the evening was a stunning success. In this case, it was also the perfect springboard for Yahoo’s David Ko, VP and General Manager of Connected Life Asia to announce the company’s newly signed deals with six Asian operators (Globe Telecom of the Philippines, Idea Cellular of India, LG Telecom of Korea, Maxis Communications of Malaysia, Telkomsel of Indonesia, and Taiwan Mobile) to distribute its mobile search service, Yahoo! oneSearch ™

5 Golden Rules of Being MoCo
This chic monthly party caters to business leaders as well as active members of the mobile and media industry peer group. If you don't fall within these criteria then it's unlikely you will get a ticket. There are usually only 70 to 80 places available for each event, so tickets are extremely limited
1. If you receive an SMS ticket, make sure you turn up, otherwise you are depriving a colleague of the opportunity to hear industry leaders share their knowledge.
2. If you receive an SMS ticket and are unable to make, please call the hotline (+65 62366 828) during office hours. This means you will be regarded as an industry nice person and remain as a priority attendee.
3. If you received an SMS ticket and didn't show up, sorry but we might have to give someone else the chance to attend the next one.
4. If you didn't receive an SMS ticket for the last MoCo Party, then you will be higher up the priority list for the next one.
5. If you sponsor the event, you can get in for sure ;-)
Oh, and if you’d still like to show up anyway, we would let you in if space permits.
Cheers
